Bangkok, Thailand, June 2008 – At 61 storeys tall, Banyan Tree Bangkok boasts one of the most glorious views of one of Asia’s most dynamic metropolises. At this vantage point, it is also uniquely poised to lead the way in Corporate Social Responsibility, enshrined in its philosophy to embrace the environment and empower people.
This year marks the tenth year that Banyan Tree Bangkok is organising the annual Vertical Marathon, which will be held on 28 September 2008, 6am-12pm. The finishing point for the race is at the hotel’s former helicopter pad on the 61st floor, now converted to the award-winning Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar. The event draws not just guests but fitness enthusiasts, charity supporters and members of the public to the iconic building in the heart of the financial district.
In Aid of AIDS
The Vertical Marathon initiative is aimed at specific healthcare issues and needs within the local communities supporting Banyan Tree Bangkok.
Hosted annually since 1999, the Vertical Marathon event has raised over THB1.5million (over US$40,000) for the HIV Formula Feeding Fund Program of the Thai Red Cross Society to support educational and health opportunities for HIV positive children. In 2007, the event raised a total of THB515,000 (US$16,612) for this charity. All proceeds go to HIV-AIDS charity via the Thai Red Cross Society.
Banyan Tree Bangkok is also committed to various other community and environment projects, such as:
- Greening Communities – A Banyan Tree group-wide initiative, to involve guests, associates and community members in a 10-year tree planting programme.
- Seedlings – A group-wide initiative in three phases of mentorship, scholarship and internship, to support children at risk
- Education – funding the Chulalongkorn University Scholarships for Master Degree students in Environmental Sciences
An Elevated Course
In 2007, the fastest racer Mr Boonchoo Jandacha made it to the top in six minutes and 16 seconds. While participants are welcomed to match or surpass the winning timing from the previous year, the key challenge would not be about speed but rather, about conquering the 1,093 steps.
Past participants in the race include the Chairman of Caring Hearts for Aids Foundation, Ms. Saisom Wongsasulak; and popular Thai media celebrities, Mr. Oliver Pupart, Mr. Somchai Kaemkat and Mr. Tannaton Palkawong Na Ayudhya.
The nominal registration fee of 350 Thai Baht per person includes the official Vertical Marathon t-shirt and a meal box. Winners will receive a trophy from Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali, as well as complimentary accommodation and gift certificates from Banyan Tree.
