A primary concern of this project is to provide the turtle hatchlings with a habitat that resembles their natural environment in as many ways as possible. Given that the project intends for the hatchlings to behave in a manner consistent with the behavior they would have adopted upon reaching the sea immediately as newborns, the one-year confinement period should offer them the opportunity to feed as they would in nature, experience natural daylight and moon phase rhythms, and to feel as they would have in the open ocean. While we realize that we can never completely imitate the deep ocean environment, there are a number of ways in which we can approximate what we believe to be their natural day-to-day existence.
