Singapore– The award-winning travel publication Condé Nast Traveler in the U.S.A. has named Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts a winner at the prestigious 2010 World Savers Awards. Honouring airlines, cruise lines, resorts, hotels and tour operators that are dedicated to saving their communities and the world, Condé Nast Traveler selected Banyan Tree as the overall winner among large hotel chains in the ‘Doing It All’ category. The Group was also “Runner-Up” in the Health Initiatives category.

Additionally, Banyan Tree also received honourable mention in the following categories: ‘Preservation, Environmental and/or Cultural’, ‘Wildlife Conservation’ and ‘Education Programs.’ Among large hotel chains, Banyan Tree was recognised as a winner, runner up and had more honourable mentions than any other hotel brand, an achievement indeed for an Asia-based brand.

Accepting the award at the World Savers Congress 2010 held at Suntec City Convention Centre on 20th Oct, Mr Ho Kwon Ping, Executive Chairman, Banyan Tree Holdings, said “We are incredibly honoured and humbled to receive this recognition from Condé Nast Traveler. For the Banyan Tree brand, it is pride in our heritage and a larger concern for the environment that spurs us to focus so intently on corporate social responsibility. Business no longer means realising transactions; businesses must be an agency in transforming society and bringing about meaningful change. With this award, we hope to inspire other companies around the world to take initiative to support and rebuild the environments and communities in which they live.”

Wrapping up his address, Mr Ho also shared that Banyan Tree is one of the first listed companies that publishes a standalone Sustainability Report that is distributed together with the annual report to its shareholders, and encourages more companies to do so, thereby placing emphasis and action behind their CSR programmes.

Following the award presentation, Mr. Ho also participated in the ‘Challenges of Growth, Building Big – and Responsibly’ panel. His wife and Banyan Tree co-founder, Ms. Claire Chiang – Senior Vice President of Banyan Tree Holdings, and Chairperson of Banyan Tree Global Foundation, which provides in-house corporate social responsibility consultancy services to the company – was one of the key panelists in the ‘Good Economics, Spreading the Wealth’ session.

A dedication to corporate social responsibility has been embedded in Banyan Tree’s core values since its founding, allowing the company to be an agent of social and economic development in destinations where it has a presence. The company defines its overall success as a combination of the triple bottom line of economy, society and environment, which helps direct their sustainable development by inspiring associates, guests and partners to take a wider consideration encompassing a long-term view when making business and travel decisions.

The Condé Nast Traveler World Savers Awards recognise leadership in social responsibility across five key areas: Poverty Relief, Preservation, Environmental and/or Cultural, Education Programs, Wildlife Conservation and Health Initiatives. The 2010 winners are featured in the September issue of the magazine. For a complete list of winners, runners-up, honorable mentions and judges panel, visit www.concierge.com
