Baitshuitai Tour (White Water Terraces)
Baishuitai is located at the foot of the Haba Snow Mountain and the source of the Naxi ethnic minority Dongba culture.
Drive from Banyan Tree Ringha for 98km towards the east, through a beautiful valley of Tibetan, Yi and Naxi villages. Baishuitai is located at the foot of the Haba Snow Mountain; a place full of legends and the source of the Naxi ethnic minority Dongba culture. It is one of the biggest such terraces in China. The spring water rises from the mountain top and flows downward. Through eons, the calcium carbonate crystals contained in the stream accumulate wherever the stream flows, making the natural terraces look as though they were made of white marbles, resembling a silver waterfall on a green mountain. The spring water reaches the rim of one shallow basin and silently trickles into another. Local people also call the terraces the “Paddy fields created by the fairies”.
The main charm of the area is still its crucial place in the ancient Dongba culture of the Naxi ethnic group. It was the sacred site for meditation and preaching of Dongba Shiluo, founder of the Dongba culture and is also the site of the Dongba scriptures which were written in the world’s oldest known hieroglyphics. Lunch is then taken in a local restaurant in Baishuitai.
