Sonzanling and Old Town Tour
Originally known as Songzanlin Lamasery, the Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty bestowed a Chinese name, Guihua Lamasery, upon it. The tour includes a visit to the Main Chapel, a chance to receive blessings from the High Lama and bring home a Tibetan Blessing Scarf - Khada.
Drive from Banyan Tree Ringha for 16km towards the west and visit the Gaden Songzanlin Lamasery. It is the largest Tibetan Buddhist lamasery in Yunnan Province and also one of the 13 famous monasteries in Tibetan Kham. The lamasery was built in 1674 under Emperor Kangxi‘s authorisation after the Fifth Dalai Lama sent a report to him, and was granted the name Gadan Songzanlin Lamasery. The Emperor Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty bestowed a Chinese name to the lamasery calling it Guihua Lamasery. With an area of about 33.3 hectares, the lamasery was built in the pattern of the Potala Palace in Lhasa and is abundant in precious cultural relics.
After the monastery, drive to the Valley at the base of Shiga Mountain and enjoy walking in the deep gully and on the edge of the Napa Flood Plains, stop in at a few villages on the way. Here in the winter months one may see the migrating Black Neck cranes that come here for the winter. Lunch will be taken in Dukezhong old town.
