Two views of the Ihuru Barnacle

Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru are at the forefront of marine conservation programs and research. A team of marine biologists works tirelessly, studying the ocean life and devising ways to preserve the delicate balance.

Even before El Nino wrecked marine havoc, dealing a crucial blow to life in the waters around the Maldives, our scientists have already begun work on reef-building projects such as the Necklace and Barnacle projects at Angsana Ihuru.

The undersea creatures that sought refuge in our more resilient reefs are the most immediate beneficiaries of these projects, with the resultant diversity profiting divers as well.

Besides the corals, our marine biologists also monitor the states of rare fish (like the Napoleon Wrasse) and turtles, a couple of which are tracked by satellite. This project is possible thanks to the generous donations of guests and eco-champions.

Learn about these and more conservation projects on the Maldives at our Diving and Marine Conservation site.

Written in local Dhivehi language and accompanied by colorful illustrations, this easy-to-read children’s storybook gives an insight into the life of the endangered Green Sea Turtle.

It tells the story of a young Green Sea Turtle, who relates his one-year stay in Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru and Angsana Maldives Ihuru as part of the resorts’ Green Sea Turtle Conservation Program.

In the book, he describes the typical lifecycle of a Green Sea Turtle, like the incubation period, the type of food that turtles feed on, and how the color of their shell and belly help to protect them from predators. He also highlights some of the threats that turtles may encounter, such as oil spills and poachers who steal their eggs or kill them for their shell and flesh.

This narrative book is distributed to schools across the Maldives to create greater environmental awareness among the younger generation.
