Category: Corporate Announcements

Bali, Indonesia – September 2012 - Perched high on the cliffs of Bali’s southernmost peninsula with unrivalled views of the Indian Ocean, Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali offers a host of activities for families to witness the colourful charm of Balinese culture. Often referred to as “The Island of the Gods,” Bali is renowned for its vibrant religious traditions and ceremonies which play a pivotal role in daily life, offering fascinating insight for guests of all ages.

From the moment a guest arrives at Banyan Tree Ungasan, Bali, they are greeted in a traditional manner with a local blessing ceremony.  A floral offering called a canag is extended, which involves sprinkling holy water on the ground and placing grains of rice on the guest’s forehead and frangipani flowers behind their ears to represent peace and prosperity.

Meanwhile other cultural festivities can be experienced at Bambu, where the restaurant regularly hosts kecak and legong dance performances by local artists from nearby Ungasan village. Staged under the moonlight, fire torches transform the garden terrace into an outdoor theatre for an evening of cultural entertainment.  An elaborate buffet representing the best of Indonesia’s culinary heritage features delicacies such as bebek betut, or slow roasted duck in Balinese spices.

The highly energetic kecak dance features the hypnotic rhythms and chants from a chorus of male dancers as chapters from the ancient Sanskrit epic “Ramayana” tell the story of Prince Rama rescuing Princess Sita from the evil King of Lanka.

On a different night, the graceful legong dance is performed. This classical Balinese palace dance is set to the enchanting sounds of gongs and percussions from the traditional gamelan orchestra. The mesmerising performance is characterised by expressive gestures and facial expressions, along with complex and intricate hand and finger movements from a cast of young female dancers.

At Banyan Tree Ungasan Kids Club, children can also experience local culture and Balinese pageantry by signing up for the “Traditional Balinese Costumes” programme. Boys and girls are transformed into a glittering parade of Balinese royalty as they play dress-up in ornate gold-trimmed outfits. The Kids Club also offers a range of games and educational activities including complimentary Indonesian language classes.

Those wishing to immerse themselves in local culture need not travel far beyond the resort’s perimeter. The hotel organises daily cycle tours to Ungasan village where guests enjoy a leisurely two-hour ride through streets that offers a fascinating glimpse into village life. The tour passes by local homes, Balinese family compounds, the local school and the administrative buildings of Banjar (the village council). Guests may witness villagers placing small offerings of fruit and flowers at temples, shrines and pathways to appease the gods or watch a funeral procession amble through the streets.
