Stay for Good

Become Part of the Restoration

We believe in travel with a purpose. Our Stay for Good programme invites you to experience the world authentically by visiting our pristine house reefs and joining our marine biologists in hands-on coral restoration.

At Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru, protecting the ocean has long been part of our island story. Through our Stay for Good programme, guests are invited to go beyond discovering the Maldives’ marine world and take an active role in helping to restore it.

Alongside our marine biologists, learn about coral biology, reef ecosystems and the challenges facing corals in a changing climate before experiencing our restoration work first-hand. From coral planting and micro-fragmentation to observing our mid-water nursery, each experience offers a closer understanding of how science can help strengthen the resilience of our house reef.

More than an island activity, it is an opportunity to contribute to something that continues beyond your stay. Corals are recorded and monitored over time, helping our team study reef recovery, encourage biodiversity and build greater understanding of coral conservation among guests, associates and local communities.

Micro-Fragmentation

Coral micro-fragmentation is an innovative restoration technique that accelerates coral growth and reef recovery. By carefully taking small fragment just a few centimeters in size from healthy, mature colonies, corals are able to heal and grow much faster than larger pieces would. These fragments are then attached to nurseries or reef structures, where they fuse together to form new, resilient colonies in a fraction of the time it would take naturally. This method not only helps restore degraded reefs but also supports biodiversity and strengthens the ecosystem’s ability to withstand climate change and other stressors.

Mid-water Nursery

A mid-water coral nursery is a suspended structure designed to grow coral fragments in ideal conditions before replanting them on the reef. Positioned four to five meters below the surface, the nursery provides corals with steady water flow, abundant sunlight, and protection from predators and sedimentation. Fragments are securely attached on meshes and placed onto the PVC floating nursery, where they can grow quickly and with high survival rates. Once mature, these corals are transplanted back onto degraded reef areas, helping to restore vibrant, resilient ecosystems while reducing pressure on natural coral populations.

A Legacy Beyond Your Stay

Our work does not end when a coral is planted. Each colony becomes part of an ongoing story of research and recovery. Through long-term monitoring, our Marine Lab records coral growth, new recruits and changes in reef biodiversity, helping us better understand how restoration can support a healthier, more resilient marine ecosystem for generations to come.
