Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We employ an integrated and participatory approach, to minimise our impact while safeguarding and enhancing the human and physical environment for present and future generations.
As stewards of responsible tourism, we have conceptualised our values in our “Brand for Good” framework to go beyond the precautionary approach and inspire exceptional experiences among our guests to “embrace the environment and empower people” at each of our locations.
Banyan Tree Macau has been the recipient of various industry-recognised awards for our compliance to the most stringent environmental practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility.
EarthCheck Silver Certification
EarthCheck, the world's leading scientific benchmarking and certification group for sustainable tourism, awarded our resort Silver Certification as recognition for continuous certification since 2015 which incorporates annual measurement of operational indicators such as energy; emissions; water, waste and paper use; chemical and pesticide use; and community involvement.
Macao Green Hotel Gold Award
Our resort has been awarded the Macao Green Hotel Gold Award since 2016, as recognition for our commitment toward sustainable hotel practices. The Award is organised by the Macao’s Environmental Protection Bureau in collaboration with the Macao Government Tourism Office, and recognises the ongoing efforts and contributions made by hotels that efficiently manage energy, waste, natural resources and food waste.
Plastic-Free Banyan Tree
Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic is having on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we as a Group managed to eliminate over 25% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning 1 in 4 of these items used will no longer be sent to landfill or end up polluting our environment.
Banyan Tree’s efforts connect with the issue of global climate action by conserving resources through efficient operations, with external assurance by EarthCheck, the leading benchmarking certification within the travel and tourism industry.
Our resort only uses LED lighting now – that has great impact on energy savings in hotel operations.
Greening Communities Together
Our aim is to restore the natural environment, whilst raising awareness of climate change through tree-planting events, around the area in which we operate, with a current target of 2,000 trees per year. In the first ten years we planted almost half a million trees, and we aim to plant 25,000 during our 25th anniversary year.
Our resort organised a visit to A-Ma Cultural Village, as part of its Greening Communities programme. Our associates came together to ensure the land was well-manured and free of weeds, for the trees to grow healthy and strong. This is also an effective way to learn how to care for the trees and their importance for the environment, our health and that of our planet.
Supporting Local Communities
Supporting long-term societal prosperity is central to Banyan Tree’s ability to create value for local communities and this is achieved by empowering them through job creation, education, supporting artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travelers to local culture and heritage.
As part of Banyan Tree’s global sustainability initiatives, we are committed to supporting and empowering local communities, with the belief that our business can only prosper if our planet and people continue to prosper. Banyan Tree Macau organises for regular visits to local disadvantaged communities, such as elderly homes and children’s homes. We have also set up internship programmes with local universities to offer on-the-job training and coaching for students, who will have 3 to 6 months’ experience as full-time associates.
We aim to organise a minimum of four cleaning activities each year, to engage members of the local community, our guests and our associates with the need for effective waste management and to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment.
We invite our guests to join our annual Earth Hour activity – switching off all room lights (while the hotel will switch off all non-essential lights in the building). Together we hope to raise awareness for climate change and resource conservation.
Christmas Tree Lighting
Our Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is one of our community activities where we encourage guests to purchase Christmas tree ornaments prepared by a local charity organisation, and hang the ornaments on the hotel’s Christmas tree before the lighting of the tree.
During this event, another local charity organization is invited to set up a booth in the lobby to raise funds with their hand-made products.
International Yoga Day
A celebration of body, mind and soul. We invite all guests and our associates to join in the complimentary yoga class.
