History of Bach Ma National Park

Bach Ma’s cool climate and sweeping mountain views first caught the eye of French colonists in the 1930s. Seeking respite from the heat of Hue, they transformed the area into a hill station retreat, complete with villas, walking paths and even a post office. At its height, over a hundred French-style villas dotted the mountain slopes, many now softened by vines and time, their remnants still visible along the summit trails.

Beyond its colonial past, Bach Ma holds deep ecological and cultural significance. It sits within one of Vietnam’s most important conservation corridors, connecting Phong Dien Nature Reserve in the north with the Annamite Mountains to the south. This position supports a rich diversity of plant and animal life, including several endangered species found nowhere else. The mountain itself has long held a place in Vietnamese cultural memory. Locals speak of its spiritual energy, and stories linger of forest spirits and ancient protectors watching over the land.

After years of ecological disruption during times of conflict, Bach Ma was officially designated a national park in 1991. Conservation efforts have since helped restore its native habitats and protect endangered species.

Bach Ma’s Biodiversity

Bach Ma National Park’s terrain shifts from coastal lagoons to dense mountain forests, forming a rare transition zone that bridges northern and southern climates. This convergence supports a wide variety of life, much of it unique to the region.

Tropical evergreen and monsoon forests cover nearly the entire park, where Parashorea stellata, Hopea siamensis and other trees threatened by habitat loss rise from the undergrowth. Meanwhile, mist-laced cloud forests blanket the park’s upper elevations, sheltering rare species such as the critically endangered red-shanked douc langur and the elusive Truong Son muntjac. Here, the striking Vietnamese crested argus, with its patterned plumage, can also be heard.

Currently, the park is home to:

  • 2,089 species of plants
  • 363 species of birds
  • 332 species of fungi
  • 133 species of mammals
  • 134 species of reptiles and amphibians
  • 58 species of fish
  • 65 species of bats

Wildlife sightings change with the seasons at Bach Ma. Spring and summer bring out birdlife and vibrant flora, while autumn sees migratory species resting near the park’s lagoons and waterways. So, depending on the season, visitors may encounter an entirely different cast of park residents.
