EarthCheck, the world's leading scientific benchmarking and certification group for sustainable tourism, Since 1987, EarthCheck has helped businesses, communities and governments to deliver clean, safe, prosperous and healthy destinations for travellers to visit, live, work and play. EarthCheck awards Banyan Tree Tengchong as Bronze Member, for achieving EarthCheck Benchmarked Bronze status in 2015.


Plastic-Free Banyan Tree

Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic is having on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we as a Group managed to eliminate over 25% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning 1 in 4 of these items used will no longer be sent to landfill or end up polluting our environment.


Resource Conservation

Banyan Tree’s efforts connect with the issue of global climate action by conserving resources through efficient operations, with external assurance by EarthCheck, the leading benchmarking certification within the travel and tourism industry. 


Greening Communities Together

Our aim is to restore the natural environment, whilst raising awareness of climate change through tree-planting events, around the area in which we operate, with a current target of 2,000 trees per year. In the first ten years we planted almost half a million trees, and we aim to plant 25,000 during our 25th anniversary year.



Our Seedlings programme was created to nurture young people at risk of societal exclusion, providing vocational and life skills and education, and preparing them for life and work.
 We concern about the education of children, Banyan Tree Tengchong has the scholarship scheme for remote rural schools for supporting the outstanding students.



Supporting Local Communities

Supporting long-term societal prosperity is central to Banyan Tree’s ability to create value for local communities and this is achieved by empowering them through job creation, education, supporting artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travelers to local culture and heritage.
Tengchong is located in the southwest of Yunnan, there are many minority nations living together, they have many specific festivals, the most popular one is the Water Sprinkling Festival.  Every year at this time we will celebrate with local people and invited guest to join with us.



Community Cleaning

We aim to organise a minimum of four cleaning activities each year, to engage members of the local community, our guests and our associates with the need for effective waste management and to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment.


Rattan DIY

Rattan is traditional handicraft in Tengchong. It ‘s known as one of “three treasures “ of Tengchong.  A Rattan requires a complicated process . In order to let more people know this traditional craft, Banyan Tree Tengchong invited the old craftsman to tell our guests the story of Rattan, and guests also can experience how to make a rattan.


Shadow Play

Shadow play is a folk drama Which figures are silhouetted in animal skins or cardboard to act out stories. It’s has long story in Tengchong. We invited shadow show troupe plays in resort regularly, and invite guest to attend the show. Meanwhile we organize guest to visit the troupe for learning the history of shadow play
