Closer to nature
A Wild World Awaits
Nestled in the heart of the Mandai Wildlife Reserve, the resort is your gateway to a world-leading nature and wildlife destination.
How a Singaporean urbanite turned from mechanical engineering to beekeeping for Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree’s in-house apiary of local honeybees.
Beekeeping was never meant to be part of the plan. Not for Xavier, beekeeper for Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree in Singapore.
He was a child of the concrete jungle. Born in Hong Kong and raised in Singapore — two of the most densely populated cities in the world — Xavier is native to a world where buildings tower overhead, not trees. But he possessed what so many of us end up losing in adulthood: an innate curiosity for wildlife, and an appreciation for animals.
Shaped by the demands of his urban landscape, Xavier trained as a mechanical engineer.
But a visit to a friend’s beehive shifted his purpose forever, reawakening his childhood curiosity for wildlife through the lens of biodiversity and ecological balance. His path diverged from engineering, and anchored naturally in bee conservation.
The two paths seem to lead in opposite directions, but Xavier argues that the connections are there: bees are expert engineers. They build entire cities out of hexagonal cells, nature's most efficient shape that maximises both space and strength with minimum material usage.
Yet for all their practically, these creatures seem to resist the laws of physics. With their petite, opalescent wings and rotund, fluffy bodies, they seem at first glance to fly against aerodynamic fundamentals.
But fly they do, and their sophisticated flight mechanics continue to fascinate engineers and scientists, while infusing the work of bee conservation with a little mystery and delight.
Reminding us that nature has many faces: some measurable, and others wonderfully enigmatic.
Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree is nestled within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve in one of Singapore's richest green corridors. On its roof, the resort’s in-house apiary shelters rehomed local honeybees.
Guests aren’t the only ones enjoying the garden, of course. The bees move purposefully from bloom to bloom. Local bees in a local garden. An edible garden with pollinators such as bees enjoy healthier crops, better yields, and more biodiversity.
The apiary residents are rehomed honeybees, carefully relocated to this rainforest sanctuary from Singapore’s urban centres. Through his company, Nutrinest, Xavier rescues the bees humanely, without chemicals or destruction. Nutrinest has spent over a decade rehoming and conserving local bee colonies, while educating the public on safe coexistence with pollinators.
As the beekeeper for Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree’s apiary, his goal is to correct the misconceptions surrounding bees, and to guide fear into a place of understanding.
Bees are peaceful. Approach with gentleness and receive it in kind. Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree’s Bee Garden Tour allows guests to tour the rooftop garden and apiary, immersing them in the calm world of bees.
Luscious honey is occasionally available on the Bee Garden Tour. Delicately infused with the fragrance of local plants and herbs, the honeybees decide when it happens and are never forced to produce it.
When the honeybees do bestow the gift of honey, guests are invited to enjoy both its flavour and benefits. A luxurious gift from a sunlit rooftop garden, where the local pollinators and local plants dance in gentle harmony.
