Banyan Tree Samui’s sustainability achievements was highly attributed to the one person that pushed for its success.
Thepsuda Lowjiw’s ongoing commitment towards ensuring Banyan Tree Samui operates sustainably significantly reduced consumption rates – through improved efficiency and adopting new technology or practices regarding key operational indicators such as energy, emissions, water, waste, paper, chemical and pesticide use. This helped the resort earn its Gold Certification from EarthCheck – the world's leading scientific benchmarking and certification group for sustainable tourism – for five years of continuous certification. This made Banyan Tree Samui the first and only resort in Thailand awarded with this certification.
Her efforts also led the resort earn the Green Hotel Award - Gold Certification, by Thailand’s Department of Environmental Quality Promotion (Banyan Tree Samui is one of only three in Samui that achieved this).
Thepsuda has implemented various best practices to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations by Earth Day 2019. She also takes care of the resort’s Coral Restoration Project, an initiative that invites guests to take an active role in the remediation of our marine ecosystem. Guests take fragmented pieces of coral that have been broken off from strong currents and replanted them in a protected area of our house reef.
Thepsuda continued to push Banyan Tree Samui to excel and walked the talk of Embracing the Environment, Empower People. From her initiative of organising charity drives and donating money to the hospital for new medical equipment, to reusing over 10,000 plastic bottles to create a Christmas tree (after which the entire “tree” was sold to a recycling plant and the money was given to community outreach projects), Thepsuda had made a great impact.
