Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We employ an integrated and participatory approach, to minimise our impact while safeguarding and enhancing the human and physical environment for present and future generations.

As stewards of responsible tourism, we have conceptualised our values in our “Brand for Good” framework to go beyond the precautionary approach and inspire exceptional experiences among our guests to “embrace the environment and empower people” at each of our locations.

Sustainability Achievements

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur has been the recipient of various industry-recognized awards for our compliance to the most stringent environmental practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility.

Plastic-Free Banyan Tree

Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic is having on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we as a Group managed to eliminate over 25% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning 1 in 4 of these items used will no longer be sent to landfill or end up polluting our environment.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur has eliminated plastic straws at every F&B outlet.

Resource Conservation

Banyan Tree’s efforts connect with the issue of global climate action by conserving resources through efficient operations, with external assurance by EarthCheck, the leading bench-marking certification within the travel and tourism industry.

Since inception, we have embedded an energy saving policy to our property to minimise our electricity consumption and reduce our impact on the local environment.

Greening Communities Together

Our aim is to restore our natural environment, whilst raising awareness about climate change through tree-planting activities where we operate, with a target of at least 2,000 trees per year. In the first ten years we planted almost half a million trees, and aim to plant 25,000 by our 25th anniversary.

Banyan Tree Kuala Lumpur embarked on a herb garden clean-up, by replanting fruits and herbs at Cochrane Primary School in Cheras. Our aim was to educate students on the different types of herbs, fruits and vegetables in Malaysia.

Supporting Local Communities

Supporting long-term societal prosperity is central to Banyan Tree’s ability to create value for local communities and this is achieved by empowering them through job creation, education, supporting artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travelers to local culture and heritage.

We have organised several activities to support the underprivilege:

  • Feeding the Community at Stepping Stone Living Centre
The team donated food and grocery items orth RM 2,020 and served food and drinks to the children, Pastor and Caregivers.
  • Lunar New Year Celebration at Rumah Caring
The team brought food and red packets for the senior citizens with the contribution of RM 1,328 from the management and associates.
  • Kechara Soup Kitchen
The team volunteered with the Kitchen to deliver staple food items to the underprivileged families of Klang Valley. The team also started supporting the Kitchen in feeding the homeless in the city with a donation of 180 boxes of vegetarian meals and eight cartons of mineral water.
  • Helping Rumah Charis
We invited 40 children from Rumah Charis for a carolling activity where they got to enjoy a sumptuous lunch and dinner before singing carols at our hotel. We have also organized a charity drive at the hotel to raise money for the children.

Community Cleaning

We aim to organise a minimum of four cleaning activities each year, to engage members of the local community, our guests and our associates with the need for effective waste management and to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment.

In conjunction with Earth Day Recycling, the team participated in a plastic collection. We worked with a school to carry out this project, creating awareness of the consequences of excessive plastic use and for them to contribute plastic bottles for recycling. Collected 20kg of plastics which was sent to the recycling centre.
