Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We employ an integrated and participatory approach, to minimize our impact while preserving and enhancing our environment for present and future generations.

As stewards of responsible tourism, we have conceptualized our values in our “Brand for Good” framework, to go beyond the preventive approach and inspire exceptional experiences among our guests to “embrace the environment and empower people” at each of our locations.

Sustainability Achievements

BANYAN TREE MAYAKOBA has been the recipient of various industry-recognized awards for our compliance to the most stringent environmental practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility.

EarthCheck GOLD: Our Gold Certification provides recognition of our continuous commitment to sustainable practices since 2013, which incorporates annual measurements of operational indicators such as energy, CO2 emissions, usage of water and waste.

PROFEPA: The Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection is responsible for the National Environmental Audit Program, created in 1992 under the initiative of PROFEPA (previously known as the Clean Industry). The programme consists of a series of activities necessary to encourage environmental audits.

Rainforest Alliance: The hotel is certified with the Preferred by Nature standard of sustainable tourism for accommodations and is recognized by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) for being equivalent to the Global Criteria for Sustainable Tourism.

It is divided into three areas designed to evaluate the business, socio-cultural and environmental performance of the tourism companies that adopt it.

The Distinctive S is a recognition of good sustainable practices in the development of tourism projects and the commitments of tourism companies operating in Mexico, under global sustainability criteria.

Plastic-Free Banyan Tree

Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic has on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we managed to eliminate over 57% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning one in every two items will not be sent to landfill or pollute our environment.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba has changed all plastic water bottles into glass bottles and plastic straws into paper straws, which have FSC certification.

Resource Conservation

At Banyan Tree Mayakoba we care about the environmental impact that our activities can cause, that is why we established an action plan to reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible. We train, direct and guide our guests, collaborators and suppliers to carry out an adequate separation of waste and understand the importance of a correct classification.

A recycled paper workshop is offered in which we implement the use of the 3R's (Reduce, Recycle and Reuse) where we raise awareness among adults, youth and children, always creating awareness in caring for the environment.

We collaborate with different companies that are authorized, certified and specialized in collecting each waste and giving them a correct final destination. Among them we have organic waste which is sent to pig farms, while each recyclable waste is valued and collected as (PET, hard plastic, cardboard, aluminum, scrap, paper and glass) without omitting the waste from special handling and dangerous waste.

Initiatives for the Land and Local Communities

Our goal is to raise awareness with activities that contribute to the land and local communities.

To celebrate Earth Day in 2021, Banyan Tree implemented and coordinated a global campaign led by to support Canopy Project Reforestation in the Sierra Gorda de Queretaro Biosphere, one of the most important protected areas in Mexico. More than 5,000 trees were planted there.

The Banyan Tree group globally has planted more than 500 thousand trees since 2007.

Our SEEDLING program is a Banyan Tree initiative that aims to nurture young people by providing education and vocational skills preparing them for life and work.

It was launched in 2007 and consists of two phases. The first is mentoring, which is provided by volunteer collaborators who have received training.

In the second phase, financial support is provided until the end of upper secondary education, having a total duration of 6 years.

Supporting Local Communities

The Hotel provides support and training to local communities to start their own small businesses that can be environmental, educational and socio-cultural, with the aim of generating a circular economy.

An example is the small company "TSAAK MEJEM KAAB", which is led by Mr. Jorge's family, where they make soaps made from Melipona honey. These soaps are offered as an amenity and can also be purchased in our Gallery Store at the hotel.

Community Cleaning

Our goal is to organize a minimum of four cleaning activities each year and to involve members of the local community, our guests, partners and suppliers. We aim to teach them how to give the correct follow-up to each type of waste, promote the responsible consumption of resources and the maintenance of a healthy environment

Marine Turtle Protection

Mayakoba has an authorized turtle field since 2010, where 4 of the 7 species worldwide come to nest on the beaches of the complex; Banyan Tree Mayakoba provides training to guests, collaborators and suppliers to promote awareness in the care of sea turtles that are in danger of extinction, creating a unique experience where they have the opportunity to observe the release of them (from May to October).

Nature Trail

It is a guided tour where you can observe the flora and fauna of Mayakoba. Stops are made at different places, one of them is the "BURRODROMO", which is one of the cenotes that the complex has, where you will learn about a brief legend of the Mayan Culture.

Recycled Paper Workshop

We host workshops where guests learn how to create recycled papers – turning them into notebooks that will be donated to a community we support called "Vida y Esperanza".

Reef Conservation

Banyan Tree Mayakoba contributes to the reforestation and care of coral reefs. The species that is reforested is known as “Acropora Palmata” (Elkhorn). The goal of OCEANUS A.C. is the construction of coral nurseries, the transplantation of thousands of colonies to increase diversity at the sites and promote the natural resilience of marine life that has been affected by climate change.

Likewise, it seeks to involve local communities, businessmen and hotels as part of a restoration network to achieve a greater impact on the beaches of Mayakoba.

Sustainability Policy
