Banyan Tree was founded with the core value of driving sustainable development. We employ an integrated and participatory approach, to minimize our impact while preserving and enhancing our environment for present and future generations.

As stewards of responsible tourism, we have conceptualized our values in our “Brand for Good” framework, to go beyond the preventive approach and inspire exceptional experiences among our guests to “embrace the environment and empower people” at each of our locations.

Sustainability Achievements

BANYAN TREE MAYAKOBA has been the recipient of various industry-recognized awards for our compliance to the most stringent environmental practices and commitment to corporate social responsibility.

EarthCheck GOLD: Our Gold Certification provides recognition of our continuous commitment to sustainable practices since 2013, which incorporates annual measurement of operational indicators such as energy, emissions, water and waste.

PROFEPA: The Federal Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection is responsible for the National Environmental Audit Program, created in 1992 under the initiative of PROFEPA (previously known as the Clean Industry). The programme consists of a series of activities necessary to encourage environmental audits.

Rainforest Alliance: The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land use, business practices and consumer behavior.

Our Chain of Custody accreditation from the PROFEPA and Rainforest Alliance provide third part assurance of our commitment to sourcing from sustainably-certified sources.

Plastic-Free Banyan Tree

Our resort is committed to our brand-wide pledge to reduce and ultimately eliminate single-use plastics from our operations, as part of our continued effort to directly address the detrimental effect that plastic has on the environment and marine life. In our first year, we managed to eliminate over 57% of targeted single-use plastic, meaning one in every two items will not be sent to landfill or pollute our environment.

Banyan Tree Mayakoba has changed all plastic water bottles into glass bottles and plastic straws into paper straws .

Resource Conservation

At Banyan Tree Mayakoba, we care about the environmental impact that our activities may cause, setting in course a plan of action to reduce our ecological footprint as much as possible. We train, direct and guide our associates to carry out proper waste separation and better understand the importance of correct classification.

Different agreements with certified, specialised and legal companies stipulate how each category of waste is handled. Organic waste are made to be food for farm animals and inorganic waste is reused or recycled where possible (e.g. plastic, scrap metal, paper, cardboard, and glass). We also work with Eco-Initiative, a company that collects burnt vegetable oil and converts it into biodiesel. Hazardous waste is handled by Ecolsur, everything from solvents and paint, alkaline batteries and aerosol cans.

Greening Communities Together

Our aim is to restore the natural environment, whilst raising awareness of climate change through tree-planting events, around the area in which we operate. In the first ten years we planted almost half a million trees, and we aim to plant 1,500 trees in 2019 to offset the CO2 emissions generated from travel for a Group Conference held at the property.

Our Seedlings programme was created to nurture young people at risk of social exclusion, providing vocational, life and education skills in order to prepare them for a work environment and the adventure called life.

This programme improves the long-term prosperity of communities by strengthening the capacities of young people in order to offer opportunities to develop their potential through tutorials and scholarships.

Seedlings beneficiaries receive financial support to cover their living and school expenses, and receive donations as school supplies from guests. Banyan Tree, in addition to providing financial contributions, also carries out sustainability activities involving the youths so that they are committed to contributing to the care of the environment. Some of the activities are reforestation, cleaning of beaches, community cleaning and turtle release.

Supporting Local Communities

Supporting long-term societal prosperity is fundamental to Banyan Tree’s ability to create value for local communities and this is achieved by empowering them through jobs creation, education, supporting artisanal cooperatives, community impact initiatives, humanitarian relief and connecting travelers to local culture and heritage.

Community Cleaning

We aim to organize a minimum of four cleaning activities each year, to engage members of the local community, our guests and our associates with the need for effective waste management and to promote responsible consumption of resources and maintaining a healthy environment.

Marine Turtle Protection

Banyan Tree Mayakoba provides support to endangered marine turtles and create awareness campaigns with guests and associates. We also invite guests to be part of our turtle releases at the beach. This activity takes place between July and August.

Mayakoba Nature Trail

Experience magnificent views, birdwatching and even a “cenote” on this guided bike tour. Our Activities team will take guests who love to interact with nature on a tour around the community of Mayakoba.

Recycled Paper Workshop

We host workshops where guests learn how to create recycled papers – turning them into notebooks that will be donated to  a community we support called "Vida y Esperanza".
